What is the best solution to the illegal immigrant?
I thought the bill that almost made it through congress a year or two ago was pretty good. It called for increased border security, but also made it easier for low-skill workers to come to the US when there’s a demand for them. Right now the only real legal avenue is employee sponsorship – which is prohibitively expensive for employers, which is why they pay illegals under the table. It also called for illegals to briefly return to their home country, pay a couple grand in fines, and with proof of employment , a clean record, and an English & U.S. history test they’d be put on a speedy path to citizenship. It failed because of that last ‘amnesty’ part – but all in all, I think its a really good solution.
