It is difficult to say what the max salary for an experienced engineer can be. It will be basically as much as the company is willing to pay you. It is possible that an experienced software engineer can make less than average wage at one company, but make millions at another. A great example is Charles Simonyi, the software engineer who headed up the Microsoft Word project in 1981. Simonyi is not “the best” software engineer, but he managed to work for a huge company (Microsoft) and he is now a billionaire. He likely would have gotten paid much less if he worked for a different company, regardless of skill. Simonyi can be considered the “highest paid” software engineer of all time, but he is completely unique and you shouldn’t consider him when making your decision.
