heat is actually a better idea than ice the cold from ice constricts the muscle and slows blood flow heat expands and opens up the muscle and makes the blood flow faster in that area so it heals faster i just recommend rest and heat packs my mother hurt her lower back working out at the gym and i had to help her out too also it helps to maybe rub/massage the area with a little more pressure each day hope he feels better soon and that i helped you
