Dave writes again from Waterbury, Vermont: “Finishing attic project and installing r21 “FastBatt” into 2×6 cavity 16.5 on center (mostly) ceiling joists. In five of the joist cavities, the actual spacing between the joists is anywhere from 15 inches to 15.25 inches and consequently, the FastBatt does not hold. What is the best procedure to remedy this problem while maintaining r value? It appears plain old furring strips, 1.5 inch by 3/8 inch, will work if nailed to sides of joists but thinking may be radically reducing effectiveness of the batts.” Answer: If the insulation is wider than the cavities you are insulating, it may be necessary to reduce the width of the insulation by cutting it. I recommend cutting it a 1/2″ wider than the cavity so it will still fit or stay in place by friction.
