What is the best playing position to take in a singles game?
Disregarding the professional singles game, I would think that the best playing position in a singles match is in the center of the court, halfway between the side alley lines, at the baseline. By positioning yourself at either side of the court (left versus the right) your opponent could more easily hit the ball to the opposite side, forcing you to run to ball and making it more difficult to repositions yourself for the shot. In terms of distance from the net, I think it depends on the type of shot your opponent makes and the type of player you are. If your opponent is a defensive player, meaning he or she plays well behind the baseline, it may be advantageous to play more at the net with more aggressive shots, which tend to give the easiest/most points in a match.
