What is the best over the counter nasal decongestant?
I’ve found that nasal sprays can work quite well if used carefully. There’s a formulation of Afrin with menthol which I’ve had great luck with. Don’t use the spray beyond what’s noted on the box (I believe this is three days) as “rebound” congestion can be quite unpleasant. The generic versions of Afrin also work well (and are frequently cheaper). After giving the Afrin a few hours, you can also try a product called NeilMed Sinus Rinse. This is really not much more than a special bottle and specially formulated packets of salt and sodium bicarb (buffering agent). You add warm, distilled water to the bottle, add the powder, shake it, and squirt it up your nose. It sounds unpleasant, but has worked wonders when I’m heavily congested. This is similar to “neti pots” used in India, but much easier to use. Unless it makes you jittery, I would reconsider Sudafed.
