What is the best or most used guitar scale for improvising or soloing?
It depends entirely on the chords used, and the key of the song. There is no one scale that works for everything – indeed, many songs use several different scales for improvising. Most people learn a pentatonic scale first and go from there. The 12 bar blues is a great progression to start with as it has very compatible chords and you can use the one scale for the entire thing. Try this: Am (4 bars) Dm (2 bars) Am (2 bars) Em, Dm, Am, Em Use an A minor scale, or at the least an A minor pentatonic scale (A, C, D, E, G) and go from there. After you’ve got the notes sorted, then comes the phrasing. Best way to put it without getting right into it is to make little phrases that sound like melodies – try singing along your ideas as they come to mind as you play and you’ll start to get a feel for it.
