A bit of basic physiology first… Accomodation is a process in which our natural lenses increase diopteric power when we focus from far to near. All individuals are born with normal accomodation but as we age, we ALL lose some accomodative power due to the hardening of our natural lens which is in turn due to aging. This is termed as PRESBYOPIA. This is the reason why, sooner or later EVERYONE will need reading glasses. Up until a few years ago, Intra-ocular lenses (IOLs) have all been monofocal (having only ONE focal point) and thus can not adjust between far and near. Patients who have been operated on for cataracts generally still need reading glasses. This is no longer true… Rezoom (AMO) and Restor (Alcon) are both multifocal intra-ocular lens implants (IOLs). Multi-focal IOLs offer “pseudo-accomodation.” These lenses DO NOT adjust between far and near, but these provide several focal points that the patient
