What is the best microbe to use for making ethanol so far?
I did an experiment on this and the results showed that B. subtilis created the most ethanol, compared to E.coli and yeast. There is a lot of exciting work developing new microbes that can efficiently produce biofuels. These microbes might make ethanol more efficiently, and they might also make different fuels that are similar to gasoline, diesel or jet fuel, and therefore more convenient. These technologies are not in large-scale production yet, but keep your eyes open because they may be coming soon. As far as which superbug is tops, it sounds like you have more hands-on experience than I do. Many of the approaches involve modifying existing microbes using techniques like synthetic biology. So the performance of the initial microbes may not tell us their ultimate potential. Could you talk about the practicality of hydrogen as a fuel source?
