What is the best method of tuning drums?
There are many different approaches to drum tuning. This FAQ can only give you a guideline for a basic tuning principle using a new head. Start by tightening opposite lugs on your drum just until you feel some resistance. After you have put equal tension on the drum head place your palm on the head and press it firmly. This will loosen the stiffness of the head and center it on the shell edge. Now strike the head close to each lug and adjust the tension to your desired pitch. Continue until you have an equal pitch all around the head. Tuning the bottom head will determine the overall pitch and sustain of your drum depending on how tight or loose you tune it.
