That’s right. You can’t just till it under. You need to remove the grass, and if you want to make it permanant and organic, the only way is to DIG it out. Which isn’t really difficult … but it is time-consuming and hard work. Use a spade-shovel to remove a square at a time. The sod will weigh more than you think, so work in small squares! Jam the blade of the shovel straight down into the sod, to just below the roots … do this several times in a straight line. Then repeat the process on three other sides, until you’ve marked out a square. Lift one edge of the square with the shovel and work the shovel all the way under to the opposite side, and to each outer corner. (Think of it like a spatula turning an egg). Then lift that entire section out. Continue until you’ve removed every last bit of sod in the area you wish to till. You can reuse that sod if you’ve got an area that’s sparse. There are sprays that you can use to kill grass, but unfortunately, they also kill most of the good
