What is the best material for my custom wedding dress?
The type of material will depend on the style of your dress.. Silk can be stiff (dupioni) or soft. Satin is a weave, not a fiber, and can be made of silk or polyester. It can be stiff or soft. Organza is stiff. Taffeta is kind of crisp. A properly fitting dress, no matter what the material, will not show every lump and bump. If you got this information from your seamstress, keep looking for another seamstress. All that being said: Soft fabrics that aren’t shiny work well for most people. Satin backed crepe is nice. I like to use both sides for contrast: crepe for most of the dress, and the satin side for trim and embellishment. Silk, if you can find a soft, non-shiny one is nice. Silk broadcloth would be one.
