Answer Randy, As you probably know there are many log building systems in existence. Each has strong points and weak points relative to various issues. For example, different designs of the horizontal joinery can all work, but one may have advantages over the next. Take the spline and caulk method where a groove is milled in the top and bottom of the log, a spline is inserted during construction and caulk applied where the spline and log meet. This method can work quite well, as long as the caulk is applied; but can you be sure it was, and can you be sure it wasn’t disturbed during construction rendering it useless. Some use foam strips on top of a tongue milled on the top of the log which fits into a groove milled on the bottom of the log. This, too, can work quite well, as long as the strip is installed and it isn’t torn during log erection, which can happen very easily.
