What is the Best LCD HDTV for me?

The screen clarity on an HDTV is determined by its resolution. There are three different HD resolutions currently available; 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The number is the amount of lines drawn on the screen, so the higher the number the greater the detail (a standard TV is 480) and the letters stand for progressive or interlaced. With that in mind it would seem that one of the 1080s would be the best but that isn’t always the case. Each of these three resolutions has their own strengths and weaknesses when compared to each other.

The 720p resolution is sometimes called ‘half-HD’ due to its lower number of lines. While this does mean its detail isn’t as high as the detail on a 1080 television that doesn’t mean its bad. Unless the LCD has an extremely high-end screen 720 televisions often look better on smaller screens than 1080s, particularly anything below the mid 20′ range. With larger screens the difference between 720 and 1080 becomes more noticeable and the higher resolution looks nicer.

The difference between progressive and interlaced televisions is a little less obvious. Interlaced video draws slower on the screen so it sometimes looks jagged or torn during high speed screen movements. Progressive draws much faster so higher speed motions draws properly on the screen.

All of this means that 1080p seems to be the best HDTV resolution. It is also the most expensive and there are comparatively few HD options that take full advantage of its resolution. 1080i seems the second best, except for its trouble with motion. Lastly, 720p seems like the worst, unless you have a small TV or cost is a factor.

Why go for the expensive LCD HDTV? Just like the old times, before LCD, we’d those CRT fat TV. It was good as it can be repaired if spoil. But, LCD can’t be repair once its spoil, that means that in the long run, let says your LCD have been running for 3 years, and suddenly, POP! You have to buy a new LCD. If you buy a more expensive LCD, it isn’t going to worth your money in the long run. So I suggest you to take a average LCD. At least it last and it is cheap! Try sales. In Singapore, we have a sales on ‘old’ things when the new comes. It is cheap and I think the best way to value your money is to wait for some sales.
