TrueCrypt is a free, open-source program that allows one to create encrypted volumes. Instead of appearing as “password-protected folders,” TrueCrypt volumes are mounted as if they are an additional drive on the system. You enter the password when you mount the volume, and from that point all the encryption/decryption is transparent and automatic. It’s based on rigorous cryptographic standards. You can move the encrypted volumes around at will (they appear as individual files when not mounted), place them on flash drives, etc. I much prefer this method of protecting data in Windows XP.
