Metformin MOA: reduces hepatic glucose production, increases peripheral utilization of glucose. Metformin affects blood glucose concentrations and may alter the control of Type I diabetes or increase risk of hypoglycaemia when used with other antidiabetic agents. Metformin is not routinely indicated for Type I diabetes. The major concern is metabolic acidosis, and metformin is contraindicated where ketoacidosis is an ongoing concern, and in metabolic acidosis or catabolic states.
