Also, you need to look at how long the dog will be alone, the size of your yard, will it be indoors or out, do you want a male or female, how big of a dog do you want… There are a lot more questions to ask before getting a dog. I think the best way to choose a dog is to let one choose you. Go the a local rescue society and find a dog that wants you. Play with them and see which ones interact well with you and your children. Some dogs will nip, or shy away, while others are running to the front of the kennel to see you and are gentle with the kids. Often there are dogs that are already trained and good with kids from families that couldn’t keep them for various reasons (allergy, moving, not enough time, etc) but are really great dogs.
