What is the best dog breed for kids, and makes for a good guard dog too?
It would be eaiser to tell you the breeds that are NOT good with children and also have a role as a guard dog. Most breeds will suit your needs. Most of the answers you have received are good ones – other than the St Bernard. St Bernards are a loyal dog and wonderful with children and families – but are not even remotely suited as guard dogs – they love everyone. Also, if anyone should suggest a Beagle – that is wrong. Beagles love everyone and while they might be quick to alert you to someone being in the area or approaching – they are not suitable guard dogs and cannot be trained to be aggressive. They also love everyone. My personal favorite for both roles is the all-American mutt. You can’t go wrong with a mutt.
