Add composted organic material (PEAT MOSS is good for the $$) and mix well to break up the soil and add nutrients as well as getting a good micropore to macropore relationship. Clay soil for a lot of reasons will be low in nitrogen so add some and be aware that a lot will be lost to the air for chemical reasons, so be generous. If you don’t have a lot of sand in your soil adding some will help but a better thing is perlite or vermiculite to lighten the soil.
