What is the best contraceptive method?
It is as they say horses for courses. Each method has its own advantages, risks and potential problems. Personally as you will see if you look back at some of my earlier implant answers, I think this is currently one of the poorest methods of contraception. It is difficult to remove if things are not going well and has a relatively high fail rate at 1%. Sheaths- no real side effects, sometimes less than aesthetically pleasing, fail rate 2-15% Cap- Bit fiddly, no side effects, fail rate 5% Combined pill- risk of clot and stroke, many lesser potential side effects, fail rate 0.2-0.3% Mini pill- less vascular risk, irregular bleeding at first, fail rate 0.3% Coil- may produce pain and bleeding, fail rate 0.3% Mirena- much less problems than older coils, much better choice than implant in my view, easy to remove if it doesn’t suit, fail rate 0.09% Norplant, difficult to remove if things are not going well. fail rate 1%.
