That all depends on what you are compressing, video, pictures, text, files, audio, drives, etc. For general purpose compression of most things, 7zip the 7Z format is the most efficient means of compression when compared to WinRar .rar and Winzip .zip. 7zip is a fantastic opensource compression program that is compatable with both .rar and .zip. http://www.7-zip.org/ For Video compression H.264 is the gold standard of the moment. For AUDIO, the debate rages between windows lossless, monkeys audio, ogg-vorbis (very popular), and FLAC. In photography, JPG is not the best compressed image you can get. New lossless image compression formats are in the works. For compressing drives, there are a number of programs out there that will compress-decompress hard drive data on the fly.
