Percchlorethylene (Perc) is fast at removing grease and oil, so is used predominantly in fabric dry cleaning. Petroleum is a slower degreaser, and is more gentle on leathers and suedes. At Harris, we use petroleum solvent, and have been doing so for almost 40 years. Approximately 90% of our garments are cleaned in this solvent. Sometimes we wetclean, and sometimes we use both processes. We make our decision based on the type of soil or stains on the garment, and what is best for the garment. Other solvents are being tested and used to a small degree, in the industry.
