What is the best ceiling cover where plaster gets cracked?
The plaster shouldn’t crack. even when someone goes into the attic. If it’s a plasterboard ceiling (the cracks will be in straight lines), it wasn’t fixed properly. Get some plasterboard nails and some scrim. Find the joists by tapping the ceiling until it’s not hollow and nail through the board into the joists. Prime the nail heads so they don’t go rusty. Cover the crack with a thin coat of vinyl filler, cover that with scrim and then give it another coat of filler, spreading it out well at either side so there’s no obvious ridge. Let it dry, then sand it smooth. If it’s a lath and plaster ceiling, the cracks will be jagged. The plaster has fallen away from the laths and the only real answer is a new ceiling. You can make a temporary repair using the same technique as for plasterboard – but drill pilot holes for the nails or the lot will fall down on your head! If the ceiling is worn out, it will just crack somewhere else a few weeks later.
