A small yet charming independent bookstore on the main drag of Los Feliz, sandwiched between a delicious Greek cafe and the Los Feliz 3 movie theatre. I love their publications section, as Skylight carries a variety of independent arts and literary magazines that are difficult to find elsewhere. The gift section also yields high-quality cards, notebooks, and Japanese stationery. Looking for a new book to read but are unsure of what to choose? Scattered across the store are the “staff’s picks,” books recommended by those that know the stock best. Be sure to pet Skylight’s resident kitty and check out the store’s schedule of author readings and book signings. Whether you’re in the market for some Dirty Girl bubble bath or a glow-in-the-dark dashboard saint or even some Deep South insider art, this is the place to come. This store was once located in Silver Lake and later Melrose in the 70’s. But came to be in it’s current location in 1996. The staff is very friendly (and as eclectic as the merchandise they sell.) They will be happy to help you with anything and everything. Some items include the very pricey mixed media Madonna and Child to the vintage Chinese posters (sweet!) to very racy girlie cake toppers and the oh-so-naughty Devil Girl stickers! Make sure you bring lots of change for parking as they have no lot so you’ll be fighting just to find a meter to park next to. A fun fact – every month (or so) the adjoining gallery throws a gala opening that’s one hella party (I try not to miss a single one!) Just call the gallery for the 411 – you’ll be glad you did!
This is truly a community bookstore gem that features a unique variety of political books with a good collection of authors of color and books and gifts for adults and children alike. While you browse through their shelves, you can also admire the latest art from local artists. This bookstore brings community to a neighborhood sadly losing the gentrification battle.
