What is the best approach to control the population of feral cats?
While we recognize that there is a feral cat population issue and appreciate that there are organizations attempting to address it, our focus at Animal Humane Society has been to serve cats as companion animals and the ways in which we can find homes for them. Last year we received more than 20,000 companion cats at our five campuses. Our goal is to find homes for them and to pursue programs that subsidize spay/neuter for low-income families. How does AHS conduct temperament assessment to ensure animals are adoptable? Our temperament and behavior assessments are based on models developed by Sue Sternberg and Emily Weiss at ASPCA who are national experts in dog behavior and are innovators in the field of shelter dog welfare. Their evaluation methods are nationally recognized and used by many organizations in the animal welfare community. Assessments are conducted by trained AHS staff members and they are reviewed by our training and behavior specialists. While no behavior assessment too
