This is always a tough question. I always ask it of potential employees – I always hate to answer it. Here’s what I do when asked that by potential employers. If your previous position was similar to the one for which you are interviewing, answer by saying, “in my previous position, the salary was $xxx, plus benefits. From what you have told me about this position, I would assume the responsibilities would be comparable. So I would expect a salary in that same range”. If this is a new position or industry for you, then do your homework first and research the range of salaries for the position. Check out salary.com’s Salary Wizard which gives salry ranges, taking into account the job title, responsibilities, your education, and geographic location. That way you aren’t going in blind. Ask the interviewer the budgeted salary range and benefits available. Then you’ll be a position to come back with a realistic expectation.
