Schellen: The Bering Strait Tunnel has been one of the major engineering dreams by several different groups, and I don’t think there is a single source of who had this idea first. But throughout the 20th century, the challenge of building a crossing on the Bering Strait has been talked about several times. There is a distance between Alaska and Siberia, so what you have is a waterway that separates two of the mineral richest regions in the world, and makes traffic of heavy goods reliant on much less efficient methods particularly between Eastern Asia, Russia, Siberia, and North American continent.
