What is the benefit of therapeutic cloning?
Tissue rejection causes many transplantations to be unsuccessful and can even trigger a fatal immune system responses. This is the same with stem cell therapy. Stem cells extracted from excess embryos from IVF clinics have a different genetic code than the recipient. Thus, tissue rejection will need to be overcome before this research can realize its full clinical application. Therapeutic cloning is a probable way of overcoming the complications of tissue rejection. The recipient of the stem cell therapy can be the donor of the somatic cell. Thus, the stem cells used for therapy will have the same genetic code as the patient. Since, the stem cells have the same genetic code as the recipient the recipient’s immune system will not reject the stem cells. While other techniques are used to avoid tissue rejection in organ transplants, the obvious benefits of therapeutic cloning can’t be ignored and the report by the National Academies of Science, Stem Cells and the Future of Regenerative Me
