What is the benefit of encouraging breezes through the house?
Even well insulated homes will experience some heat transfer. Opening your house up to take advantage of breezes is therefore a great way to remove summer heat or bring in day time warmth in winter. The general rules regarding breezes are: SUMMER: Open your house up during the afternoon and at night time or when it is cooler outside than in. WINTER: Open your house up during the day or when it is warmer outside than in. Good security screens on windows you intend to leave open may be required for peace of mind. Your new building or renovation should be designed to allow breezes through. Firstly, you must identify the direction of the predominant breezes in your area and place doors and windows on opposing sides of rooms where, when opened, they will allow a cooling breeze to blow through your home. In the humid tropics, try to ensure bedrooms can get some air-flow on hot nights. Ceiling and portable fans also help circulate air (1).
