Nerve cells, called neurons, are the major units of the brain. Neurons transmit electrical and chemical signals that instruct the muscles to move. At birth, the human brain contains its maximum number of neurons—from 20 billion to 200 billion. Thousands of neurons are lost daily throughout a person’s life.
