The “basic idea” of Telecom networking is the same whether you are referring to a traditional Carrier based network, or a premises-based, Corporate managed network (typically architected with PBXs or other forms of centralized call control), or in today’s trend of “converged” networks that must address any media communications and are usually IP centric – the fundamental premise is the same: taking control (signaling) and media (in this case usually voice) and leveraging these types of functionality across a framework of inter-connecting, inter-operating components, so that communications can be established between two or more parties. Of course once you factor the details to operationalize and manage such a framework – it is then that the details get quite technical. You have to plan for up-time (availability) and resiliency (reliability, to include redundant design) so that the system as a whole, is highly reliable and in some cases self-healing.
