What is the basic function of complex carbohydrates in our body?
In general, carbohydrates are the bodies main source of energy. The refined (simple) carbohydrates lack in natural nutrients and are likely to get converted into fat which is stored in the body. They produce blood sugar spikes in the body which is bad for pancreas and lead to diabetes and obesity. On the other hand however, the digestive enzymes takes time to break the sugar chain in the complex carbohydrates into individual sugars, meaning, the complex carbohydrates get absorbed gradually, maintaining the blood sugar level. You want most of your carb source to come from complex carbs. These can include -Wholemeal/multigrain bread, rice, pasta -Some cereals – oats, wheat -based biscuits -Potatoes, peas, sweet corn, parsnip, carrots -Legumes – lentils, baked beans, chickpeas -Fruit -Milk and yogurt.
