Which country demanded independence first?(in the last 10 years) In the 1990’s, the fall of Yugoslavia began with the unilateral secession of Slovenia and Croatia. The west’s premature recognition of these republics as independent states exacerbated tensions and led to conflict. Two years later the scenario was repeated with Bosnia-Hercegovina’s violent secession. Only Macedonia’s secession, occurring roughly between these two events, went relatively uncontested and certainly with the least tensions and no violence.
