What is the background of the Swan Boats in the Public Garden?
In 1877, Robert Paget was inspired by the opera Lohengrin to add swans to his fleet of boats. The Paget family had begun running a rowboat concession in the Public Garden in 1870. They adapted the boats to be powered by pedals in 1877 and hid the mechanism between giant swan figures. The swans serve both a fanciful and practical purpose.
