What is the Avraham Avinu neighborhood?
This neighborhood was founded as a Jewish neighborhood in 1540 by Jews, exiled from Spain in 1492, who moved to Turkey, and then from there, came to Hebron, led by Rabbi Malkiel Ashkenazi. This was the central neighborhood in Hebron, called the Jewish Quarter, until the 1929 riots and massacre (http://www.hebron.org.il/pics/tarhome.htm). The neighborhood was destroyed by Hebron’s Arabs and rebuilt following the return to Hebron in 1967. Today over 30 families live in the neighborhood. This is also the site of the Avraham Avinu Synagogue. For more information see http://www.hebron.org.il/sites.
