According 2010 EPA data, "The average family of four can use 400 gallons of water every day, and, on average, approximately 70 percent of that water is used indoors."

So if you take 400 gallons a day x 365 days, then the average American family uses 146,000 gallons of water per year. That is roughly the amount of water that flows over Niagara Falls per second or the amount of water held in a 130 foot tall municiple water tower.

So where does all this indoor water consumption come from? While one may think large appliances like the dishwasher and washing machine would be the culprits, it is in fact the combined uses of the bathroom that account for most our household water use. See EPA chart below.

The government’s Water Sense program lists a number of ways to decrease household water use. Read more here: http://www.epa.gov/WaterSense/pubs/indoor.html
