What is the average salary for a brain surgeon?

According to this article I found (http://mdsalaries.blogspot.com/2007/01/neurosurgeon-salaries.html) the average salary can be $380K, $420K or $530K depending on which survey you use. Payscale.com has quotes that are significantly lower (http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Neurosurgeon/Salary). I think that the average is probably closer to the $400-500K range. If you check out the reported income here: http://www.jobs-salary.com/neurosurgeon-job-salaries.htm, there are a few outliers – I personally think that the $49K listings are way off – but the majority support the $400-500K range. I know that the surgeon’s fees are used to pay for the entire office support, billing, malpractice, etc. but consider that a single neurosurgical procedure in NYC can range from $20K-$100K+, a good neurosurgeon can bring in a couple of hundred thousand or even a million dollars a month. This averaged throughout areas of the US with a lower COL makes the $500K average seem quite plausible.
