What is the average pay of an English teacher in China?
I was in Changzhou, Jiangsu province (near Wuxi) for one year teaching at a private International Foreign Language (grades 1 to 5). I recieved 4500RMB monthly (no tax), plus free accommodation, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.. A pretty good deal and the traveling experience was awesome. I have blond hair and blue eyes, but my friend had brown hair and brown eyes and received the same salary and perks, so I don’t think it makes a difference (they just really like to touch your hair if you’re blond, haha). A guy I know was working in Shanghai, and he was making 16,000 RMB monthly, but he had to pay for his own place and his own food. Remember that you get a higher pay in bigger cities, but the cost of living is much higher as well. I would advise staying away from larger cities like Shanghai and Beijing because of the pollution and smog, though it does radiate out to the smaller urban areas around them too. Good luck!
