The “full year resident”part of table three shows that the mean adjusted gross income was $39,433 in 1998, but the median, or middle income, was considerably less at $25,800. If you are interested in a typical resident, it may be better to use the median, because very large or atypical amounts will not distort the picture. Since you mention the census, we must caution you about several special features of tax data that cause it to be different for other data sources.
