The female elephant reaches sexual maturity at around 9-12 years of age and become pregnant for the first time when they are about 13 years old. They can reproduce until the age of about 55-60 years. The gestation period for an elephant is the longest of all mammals and lasts about 22 months (630-660 days), with only one calf being born. Twins are a very rare occurrence in the elephant species.
