A hand set is pretty cheap, i bought a p903 for $300 and the monthly bill was ~$80 per month. The phone at the time was the latest and greatest, now the p906 model is out. The iPhone set me back ~$300 and the monthly bill is also under $100 per month. Basically, phones are very cheap in Japan.
