What is the Average Class Size?
Class size does vary somewhat, depending on the nature of the class and its objectives. For example, accounting classes which usually require student interaction with the professor, have between 30 and 35 students. Classes such as Sales which involve student presentations usually have around 25 students. A course such as Principles of Management, typically focusing on principles that can be taught effectively through lecture, may have 50 students. The average is around 28 students per section.
Every year, we accept 10-20 new graduate students into the MFA program. That means that there are about 40-50 students (including Thesis students) in the program at any given time. However, the average size for classes varies according to the course. For graduate animation classes, the average size is 10-20. It is rare to have more than 20 in any of our courses. Courses outside the animation department vary in size.
The average class size at Valpo is about 20 students. The “range” you might encounter can be anything from an 80-student Psychology lecture (with a smaller lab) to a class of 3 students in a course for your major. Our faculty-to-student ratio is 1 to 12, creating an atmosphere of personal attention and care in which you will know your professors directly and they will know you by name. We never have graduate students teaching classes, and well over 90% of our professors have terminal degrees in their field (such as a doctorate).
