What is the average attrition rate for youth involved with LAYC?
This is a difficult question to answer because of the varying programming and service areas, as well as differing lengths of time the programs operate, as well as the service populations. Our programs working in in-school settings with moderate risk youth have low attrition rates. Our programs working with high-school dropouts, with long programming cycles, have higher attrition rates. Lumping them together or providing a global average would be a bit like comparing apples and oranges. However, what LAYC does regularly examine is year to year return rates. So, if an individual participated in a program (or more than one program) at LAYC during one year, do they return the following year? For 2008, our youth return rate was 39.6%. Or put another way, of our 2008 participants, 39.6% were participants at LAYC the previous year (2007).
