While this may sound like a cop-out, the answer is “it depends”. Consider: Geography: One can usually find unbelievably cut-rate designers in Eastern Europe, Asia, and third world countries. Salaries are lower there since the cost of living is equally low. Make sure that you have clearly specified your work if you outsource it to a different culture/language locale. Even in North America, the fees charged by a New York designer and one from Arkansas will vary greatly. Competition: The more of them around, the cheaper they are. And the busier a designer is, the more expensive they are. When projects are near to completion and there is nothing on the horizon, it is amazing how quickly rates change.
