What is the attrition rate of VPP star status sites?
The first VPP site was approved in 1982. As of January 1, 2006, 1,453 organizations were recognized by OSHA’s VPP initiative. Of these, 1,056 are participants in the Federal plan and 397 are participants in State plans. Since VPP’s inception, 286 sites have withdrawn from the program, for a variety of reasons. In some cases, the need for VPP recognition ends when projects are completed, plants are closed, or specific operations are shutdown. In other instances, a change in management (due to takeovers or other reasons) or loss of union support may sidetrack the program. And, finally, some sites that have achieved Merit Status may not continue on the path to Star Status.
