What is the Artist Proof Studio?
The Artist Proof Studio (APS) was founded in 1991 in response to a call made by Nelson Mandela to all South Africans to participate in the building of a new, democratic South Africa that would promote reconciliation, cultural diversity, equality, and above all, a culture that celebrates human rights. APS was established by Kim Berman and Nhlanhla Xaba, both accomplished artists and art teachers. It was located in the Newtown Cultural Precinct, in the inner city of Johannesburg. In 1993, it was formally registered as a not-for-profit, Section 21 company. APS is a community printmaking studio operating as a centre for artists to gather, learn together, and find a way to make a living through art. The Studio teaches and provides excellent facilities for art production with a range of printmaking techniques.
