Brazilian aircraft yesterday located debris, which may be the remains of the Air France passenger jet that disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean with 228 people on board on Monday. The aircraft parts, which have not been confirmed as belonging to Flight 447, were sighted 650km north of the islands of Fernando de Noronha, near to the position where contact with the missing airliner was last made en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris in the early hours of Monday. The sighting helped to narrow down the potential crash area as a huge international air and sea search, involving more than a dozen military aircraft and several naval and merchant ships swung into place. “Materials were found at points about 160 kilometres distant from each other: an aeroplane seat, small white objects, an orange life vest and traces of oil and kerosene,” said Colonel Jorge Amaral of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
