What is the argument for and against school vouchers?

For: people who are paying privately to educate their children shouldn’t have to pay again for public schools that their kids don’t use. Also, that parents should have the right to take their kids out of crappy public schools and send them elsewhere if they choose. This would force the crappy public schools to be more “competitive” and do a better job. Against: This is just a thinly veiled gimmick to funnel public tax money into financing private religious schools. That money should be going to improve public schools. Just because you don’t use a public service doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have to pay for it (I don’t use the library or the parks, why should I pay for them?) Public education benefits everybody. If you want to send your kids elsewhere, that’s fine (as long as the school meets basic educational standards) but not on the public tab.
