What is the aqueduct protection program?
An important component of the Operations and Maintenance department is the Aqueduct Protection Program, which detects deterioration in the Water Authority’s pipelines so they can be repaired or replaced before they fail. The Water Authority shuts down and drains sections of its nearly 300 miles of pipeline at regular intervals so that engineers and inspectors can use advanced technology along with visual inspections to locate damaged pipe. Since the program started in 1990, over 60 pipe sections have been repaired or replaced thereby preventing more costly or potentially catastrophic results.
