Answer Hi Ben, I started in the Air Force when I was in college so 17. I didn’t actually have a commitment at that point and was just going through the college training program called ROTC. I have been a pilot the whole time. I started my first year as a student learning to fly and then earned my wings and I am not a pilot but still training on new aircraft and skills. Officers in the military are required to have a college education. Enlisted members do not have that requirement although many of them have been to college. To be a pilot you must be an officer. Before you graduate college, assuming you are going through an officer program, you are just a cadet and not “really” in the Air Force. Once you graduate you are the lowest officer in the Air Force but still out rank around 70% of it since most of the AF is enlisted.
